Semester Test

Have you ever thought of what Grease would be like in our world today? High School Musical is a modern version of a girl and boy who meet on vacation and are very different people to each other than to the other people around them. Gabriella is s very smart and reserved girl, but on vacation she seems fun and outgoing. Troy is athletic and only focused on sports, no time for girls. But on vacation, he seems to be open to anything and a real friendly teenager. When Gabriella moves to Troy's school, they both see the other side of each other and when they try to branch out and show their true selves, the school revolts.

Gabriella Montez's family went on a winter vacation at the same place Troy Bolton's family went. One night a get together for the teenagers, Gabriella and Troy are picked to sing karaoke together. Both knowing this does not at all fit with their personalities, they hesitate, but in the end do the duet. It's a hit and they speak for a little while afterwards, enough to exchange numbers. When school starts back and the Wildcats, the school basketball team Troy is the captain of, are ready to win the championship. For Troy, everything is back to normal, no more singing. Everyone is in drama class one day and Troy and Gabriella end up realizing she has moved schools; they now attend the same school. Even though they are both excited about being closer, they both quickly explain to each other that the person they both met on vacation is not the same person they are here. School goes on, and although they want it to workout between them, their differences keep separating them. Troy's friends are noticing he is not as focused on basketball as he used to be, and Gabriella's friends are afraid she'll be too caught up in Troy to join their math club. School musicals come around and while watching auditions, Gabriella wants to try out. Mrs. Darbus explains that she must have a partner since single auditions were long before. Troy volunteers, not for himself but for Gabriella. Troy and Gabriella's name show up on the "Call Back" list in the front of the school; the students go wild. Some students begin confessing their hidden love of a hobby they do, but others quiet them and tell them to "stick to the status quo." Chad, Troy's best friend, and Taylor, Gabriella's best friend, decide to change Troy and Gabriella's mind. When Gabriella sees a video or Troy saying the musical means nothing to him along with her, she changes her mind about him. The two personalities keep clashing for each of them, but in the end they find a way to work it out.

High School Musical, along with Grease and West Side Story, are a story line of boy and girl falling in love, but certain people or traditions hold them back. There are some differences between these though. High School Musical is more modern and a story about a boy and girl who choose not to stick with the status quo and stick out by performing in a musical. Grease is also about a boy and girl falling in love who are very different, but also about a boy becoming more sensitive instead of impressing all of his friends. West Side Story is more about tradition. A boy and girl of different ethnic groups meet at a dance of a very separated school. The two groups do not mix at all, and are definitely not allowed to love each other. West Side Story is a story about a boy and girl who fall in love and their struggles to fight against other to keep that love. Fiddler on the Roof could also be compared to High School Musical. Although High School Musical is not about the Russians, it is about tradition. The high school superstar, Troy, is not suppose to also perform in musical, according to tradition. When he meets a girl, he begins breaking out of his shell and breaking these traditions much like the Fiddler's daughter did when she and her husband decided to marry without a matchmaker.

Although I had seen Grease before and already thought I would know the whole story line behind this musical, High School Musical is also very different. It's not a complete repeat of any other musicals done before, but is similar to help it keep to "musical" theme. Also, I like that High School Musical had two movies after it to continue the story. I'm of the people who wonder what happens after the shows over, and with following movies it gives the watcher another ending.

High School Musical is a very modern musical about a boy and girl's struggles to not stick with the status quo and to just be different. It can be compared to other musicals as well and it's a very entertaining musical.

Fiddler on the Roof

Tevye is an old man with a wife and four daughters. He is a poor Jew who works very hard and relies on his wife and daughters to help him work the farm. In this village, there are certain, well-known people: the beggar, matchmaker, and rabbi are some examples. This place is divided into Jews and Christians. There are more Christians than Jews but Tevye says they don't bother the Christians and the Christians don't bother them. Yente, the matchmaker, is suppose to choose the spouses for each person. The daughters are nervous about who will be chosen for them because they will be with them forever. The family does not have enough money to use the matchmaker. Tevye sings If I Were a Rich Man, wondering what it would be like if he had just a small fortune. Mottle, a poor tailor, is now staying with Tevye's family. Mottle and the daughter have always had a thing, and they're trying to find a way so they can get married, but he chickens out when trying to ask her father. Everyone is standing around the table and singing, celebrating the Sabbath. Tevye is now at the butcher's house and is talking to him about buying cows. The butcher is an old man who does not look suitable for the young girl. While they are speaking, the butcher thinks they are talking about the marriage, so the conversation is getting very weird. The butcher confesses that he likes the daughter and Tevye agrees to let his daughter marry the butcher. Tevye and the butcher go to a bar to celebrate the soon wedding. Tevye thanks God for sending his daughter a husband. Tevye tells his daughter that she is marrying the butcher. Her mother is very satisfied and thankful, but the daughter is disappointed because she was expecting to marry the tailor. The tailor says that the only reason to pick a man for her to marry should not be for the money, he is very disappointed. The daughter tell Tevye she doesn't want to marry the butcher and she can't. Tevye says she has to because he said so and they made an agreement. The daughter says she'll do anything to get the money he needed, and begins crying and begging not to marry him. Tevye says she won't force her. The tailor comes and says he has to talk to Tevye, but Tevye says not now. He keeps trying to convince him to listen and tells him he has the perfect match for her; himself. Tevye says he's crazy for trying to arrange his own marriage, but then the sailor accidently tells him they made a pledge to marry over a year ago. Tevye gets very mad and says that marriages must be arranged, no other way. The tailor argues that, "even a tailor is entitled to a little happiness." Tevye is contemplating whether to allow them to marry or not, even though the man is poor. He finally agrees to the marriage and both the tailor and daughter are very thankful. Now Tevye has to figure out a way to get out of the promise of marriage he made to the butcher.

Nonverbal Communication

Part One;
By Mr. Bean's actions, he is a very bad driver. He is in a class room, and is copying everything the man who sits beside him does. Mr. Bean is trying to out-do the man he's sitting by, by having more items on his table. He seems very confused by the test and acts like he won't be able to do it. He's very nervous and can't answer any of the questions, so he tries to cheat off the guy next to him. After he cheats, the man decides he did all the answers wrong, so he wads the paper up and throws it away. Mr. Bean's answers are now also wrong. He tries copying the man's second try. The man catches on that he is trying to cheat, so he turns his paper over. Mr. Bean lays down and blows on the paper so he can see the answers. The man catches on again, and puts his paper on the opposite side of the desk. Mr. Beans crawls under the table to the other side, acting like he dropped his pencil, to once again try to copy. He begins to cry when he realizes there is no way for him to copy. He realizes he was taking the wrong test when there are two minutes left, he does not finish. Mr. Bean leaves the classroom and he is now at the beach. He was going to change into his swimming suit because he didn't see anyone but then he realized there was a many watching. He's now trying to figure out a way to change so he can swim. He puts his swimsuit over his pants and tries to take his pants off under it. He is really struggling, but is making some progress. He finally gets his pants out from under his swimsuit. Then, he finds out the man is blind.

Part two:
He is now at church. He sits in the front row, and doesn't understand anything to preacher is saying. He gets bored and begins looking around at the church. The man catches him not paying attention. He makes a big scene when he sneezes, and can't find a Kleenex. He uses the inside pocket of his suit jacket to blow his nose. He tries to start paying attention again and begins falling asleep, but has a bad dream that makes him jump and wake up. He falls asleep again and begins laying on the man's lap and then going towards the floor. He is now laying on his knees and head, but wakes up again and jumps. His hand got stuck in his pocket while putting away a mint wrapper, and while he was trying to pull it out, he punched the guy in the chest. The church begins singing again and the only word he knows is Hallelujah, so he sings that word very loud. He begins dancing to try to pick up the mint he lost on the floor, then accidentally puts it in his pocket he sneezed in.

Part three:
Mr. Bean is walking on the street and sees a man playing the saxophone, he wants to donate money to him, but can't find any. All he finds is a white towel, so he begins dancing by it until someone gives him money. A woman gives him money so he gives it to the man. Mr. Bean is going shopping and is showing off his credit card to the people in the cosmetics department. He begins coughing loudly and falling to the ground because the smell of the perfumes is so strong. He warns a lady walking into that department not to go. While shopping, he sees a toothbrush and remembers he needed to brush his teeth so he takes it out, uses it, then puts it back. When he gets to the towel area, he begins trying on the towels and looking at himself in the mirror to make sure the towel suits his right. Now, he is in the kitchen utensils area. He uses one of the knives to cut a potato, to test it out. He begins using items to test 0ut each item he's buying to make sure it works right. While at the phones, he can't find one to work, so he takes the one the store is using because it has a dial tone. He is trying to return the man in front of him credit card and ends up getting his hand stuck in the pocket. Now, he has followed the man all the way to the bathroom and stall and is stuck with him. He is now eating in a restaurant and writes a card to himself, but later finds the card and thinks someone sent it to him. He begins playing Happy Birthday to himself with the knife and glasses at his table. When he gets his meal, the hamburger is not cooked at all and does not taste good to him. He is trying to find places to hide the hamburger meat so he doesn't have to eat it. He moves tables and now the violinist is playing Happy Birthday to him. He is served a new hamburger because the waiter spilled his plate. Mr. Bean is now at some type of formal, and is practicing the way he will shake and also checking his breathe. He realizes his breath smells awful and tries to take care of it by using breath spray and brushing his teeth with his finger. He takes a string out of the lady's apron standing next to him to use as floss, but gets it caught in his teeth. He begins practicing how to greet again. The man beside him and all the other men have cloth in their suit pocket so he's trying to figure out a way to make him one. He finds a piece of paper in his pocket and makes it into the same shapes as the cloth. While trying to file his fingernail on his zipper, he can't get his zipper up by the time the queen is there to greet him. His hand is now stuck in his pants and when trying to bow to greet her, he buts her in the head and knocks her down. Mr. Bean is now at the pool and got stuck in the kids slide and also got yelled at by the lifeguard. He sees the highdive and decides to climb to the very top one. When he gets to the top, he gets scared and can't manage to get off, back to the ground. He is now kneeling and is crawling off the edge trying to get off and into the pool. Two kids behind him are waiting and making fun of him. After he comes up out of the water, he realizes his swim trunks came off and a little girls has taken them with her. After everyone's suppose to be gone, he gets out and then sees a group of a girls swim team then runs away. While leaving, he cannot pay the charge, so he leaves his car in the lot and walks out of the lot. His plan is to raise the bar by entering, then while the bar is still raised, drive his car through. During his plan, another car enters so he has to back out. He sees another car entering and makes them backup so he can get out for free. He is now at the park and sits by a man on the bench eating a sandwich. Mr. Bean gets his own loaf of bread out and cuts it with scissors to make his own sandwich. He gets all the other supplies out to put on his sandwich. After his sandwich is all made, he sneezes and it flies everywhere. The man sitting beside him offers the other half of his sandwich. Mr. Bean is now at the movies and is messing with the lady sitting beside him. In the movie, he gets very scared and is screaming and jumping a lot. He tries to leave the movie early, but a man gets mad when he walks in front of him. He tries plugging his ears with the popcorn and puts the popcorn bag over his head so he doesn't have to watch the rest of the movie.

Too Much Homework

Homework is very helpful to students, but too much homework can cause major problems. Many students complain about having too much homework and adults argue that they're "just too lazy." Too much homework could be the cause of stressful, overweight, and discontent students.

Having school five days a week for seven hours is stressful enough, and an added four or five hours of homework every night does not lessen that stress level. High school students have much to worry about: preparing for college, getting and keeping a job, and keeping their grades up. With all of this, students barely have enough time to enjoy their life. A student gets up in the morning and goes straight to school until about 3 or 4 o'clock. After school, most either go to work or go to practice for an activity they do. By the time they get home, it's either time for them to have dinner and for some, it's time for them to go to bed to get the 8-10 hours of sleep that is suggested. After dinner, students begin gathering the homework they have to have done for the next day. This leaves no time for spending time with family or for any other enjoyable activities.

There are many excuses for the large number of obese children today, but one reason may be not enough free time. My parents talk about how when they were in grade school, they would stay outside playing until it was time for dinner and after dinner they would go back outside until it was time for bed. If students had less homework, they would have more time in the afternoons to go outside and play or exercise. Many students may also not be able to join an athletic team because of the amount of extra work they have after school and on weekends. If teachers would limit the amount of homework given to 1 or 2 hours tops a night, students may be less likely to become very unhealthy and more likely to be healthy and do their homework.

Homework is time consuming and may keep students from doing some activities, but the main problem is students become unhappy when they think about the amount of homework they are assigned every night. If all students had to do was go to school and learn for the 7 or 8 hours they're there, and went home to have free time or only a few hours of homework to do a night, they would be a lot more satisfied. Also, I think if students had less homework a night, they would be more likely to actually finish it and get it right because they wouldn't be dreading all the hours they still had to go.

Teachers assigning too much homework for schools may be the cause of stressed, overweight, and unhappy students. If teachers would cut down the hours of homework or amount of homework they assigned each night, students would benefit the way they should from homework.

Duel

Our class just started watching the movie Duel directed by Steven Speilburg. The movie looks like it was made a few years ago. There are no voices, just the radio playing and the sound of cars driving. The man who is the main character right now is a middle aged man with glasses and brown hair. He resembles the man in the movie The Lovely Bones who kidnaps Susie Salmon. The man drives a red car and and seems frustrated with the very dirty 18 wheeler in front of him, so he passes him. While the man in the red car is getting gas, the 18 wheeler also pulls off into the same gas station. He has just called his wife at the gas station to check on her because they had a fight the night before. Their fight was over his friend trying to rape his wife. The man has just left the gas station and as soon as he's back on the road, the 18 wheeler is following him again. David is the man in the red car's name. The 18 wheeler passes David and drives very slow in front of him, everytime David tries to pass him, the 18 wheeler swirves into the other lane, too. David has just gotten back in front of the 18 wheeler and the 18 wheeler is out of site, then starts speeding up right behind him.

The man just got cut off by the 18 wheeler, and ran into the fence. David is complaining and seems to have whiplash. He goes to the cafe across the street to wash his face off and try to get calmed down. He tells himself everything is OK and the 18 wheeler is gone, but when he goes back into the man part of the cafe, he sees the truck parked outside with no one in it. Now, he's trying to figure out which man in the cafe is the driver. He has seen two men with the same boots as the one he saw at the gas station. David is now trying to figure out how to make peace with the man driving the 18 wheeler. One of the men with the brown boots just left in a different truck, so that eliminates David's choices. He told one of the men who he thought was driving the truck to "cut it out" and knocked his drink out of his hand, so the man punched him and left, but not in the 18 wheeler. The 18 wheeler just left, but David still doesn't know which man is driving it. He is now driving in his car again on the highway. He stops to try to help a bus driver get unstuck and ends up getting his car stuck under the bus. The 18 wheeler turns around , so the man gets his car out from under the bus and drives off while the 18 wheeleer gets the bus unstuck. David is driving and has to stop for a train. While he's waiting, the 18 wheeler comes up behind his and starts pushing him towards the train. Luckily, by the time it pushes him all the way to the tracks, the train has gone by. David runs off the side of the road and the 18 wheelers drives past him. Whenever David starts driving again, he sees the 18 wheeler waiting on the side of the road and pulls back onto the road when David is almost passed him. He stops at another gas station and again, the 18 wheeler stops on the side of the road. David calls the police on a payphone and in the middle of his conversation, the 18 wheeler runs into to phonebooth right after David jumps out of it. The 18 wheeler runs into everything and destroys everything at the gas station so David leaves again. The 18 wheeler is still following so David pulls on the side of the road by a train to hide. After, the 18 wheeler passes and David takes a nap, he pulls on the main road again to find the 18 wheeler waiting for him on the side of the road. David gets out of his car to confront the man driving. The 18 wheeler drives off, so David stops an old couple driving by to ask them if they'll call the police. They say no and David begins driving again, determined to beat the 18 wheeler. The 18 wheeler stops following as close, but David's car begins smoking. The 18 wheeler is following again. David seems to be going crazy.

Bye, Bye Ipods

Who & What?
Many school principals, superintendents, and teacher suspect that ipods are now the new way in many high school to cheat on tests, quizzes, etc.

When & Where?
During school, students sneak their ipods during tests or quizzes to either look up or listen to answers.

Why?
Since phones have been banned, students now use their ipods to help on tests to look up answers so they can make better grades.

Agree or Disagree?
Although I do wish ipods would continue being allowed in schools, I do see a reason for them being ban. I agree because it's not right for students to have ipods in class because it does provide a way of cheating and even though students may want to listen to music after they are done with work and tests, they can do more productive things, like read or finish other work. However, I think ipods should be allowed before school, during lunch or free periods, and after school.

Houston, we have a problem.

Earthquake:
The earthquake that hit Chile has been devastating for the country. The main problems being faced are looters, deaths, trapped people, and supplies. Looters are the people who rummage around in the run down buildings trying to find food, clothing, or anything they can find to help them survive. The problem with the looters is they are stealing from others, even if they are surviving.

Global Warming:
Global warming has become a large topic in the United States. Recently, people are refusing to believe that global warming is happening because of the winter precipitation that has happened so often this year. What people don't know is all the precipitation is a result of global warming. With so much heat in the air in the summer, the water from oceans, lakes, rivers, etc. is evaporated into the air resulting with large amounts of precipitation throughout the year.

European Storm:
The storm, Xynthia, blew into France Sunday morning, flooding the whole place. Not only was France affected, but also other surrounding countries.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100301/ap_on_re_eu/eu_france_deadly_storm

Similarities:
All three tragic events that have happened are natural disasters. They have not only affected the single countries being involved, but also countries surrounding or even the whole world. Within all three, many deaths have occurred, or in the case of global warming, many deaths will occur in the future. Help for all three are taking place every second.

Most Important:
Of all three, global warming is the most important because it will affect the whole world, and may be the most disastrous. In the long term, ice caps will melt, causing all the bodies of water to overflow creating major floods, and eventually these places will drop to dangerous temperatures.
